UES Assembly Challenger Hands Out Masks, Hand Sanitzer

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A young challenger hoping to oust an incumbent Upper East Side lawmaker will hand out masks and hand sanitizer throughout New York 73rd State Assembly District this week.

Cameron Koffman and his campaign staff started handing out supplies in early June and are continuing to organize the giveaways through the next two weeks. On Tuesday, Koffman distributed supplies in Sutton Place Park.

Koffman's campaign manager told Patch that the candidate handed out 1,000 bottles of sanitizer and 1,200 masks last week. The campaign hopes to distribute an additional 2,000 bottles and masks.

The 22-year-old political hopeful is running against incumbent Dan Quart — who has also organized mask giveaways — in the June 23 Democratic primary elections. The 73rd State Assembly District spans most of the Upper East Side west of Third Avenue and portions of the East Midtown, Murray Hill and Sutton Place neighborhoods.

Masks and hand sanitizer have been in high demand in New York City since before city's first case of novel coronavirus was confirmed in March. The city experienced one of the worst outbreaks of the virus anywhere in the world, with more than 200,000 infections and more than 20,000 combined confirmed and probable deaths, according to the latest city data.

Here are the events Koffman has planned this week:

• Wednesday, June 10: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near Second Avenue and East 47th Street;
• Thursday, June 11: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ruppert Towers at 91st Street and Third Avenue;
• Friday, June 12: 2 p.m. to 5 .p. on Madison Avenue and East 81st Street (Outside of P.S. 6).
