UES Council Member To Hold Poo Pickup Sign Contest
Council Member Julie Menin is asking Upper East Side residents to help design a new visual campaign urging dog owners to clean up their act.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Council Member Julie Menin wants you to help fight the scourge of sidewalk dog poo scofflaws.
And the current "Curb Your Dog" signs aren't enough, her office says.
In light of a recent study that revealed a disgusting level of fecal bacteria in Upper East Side sidewalk puddles — and therefore, Upper East Side shoes — Menin is launching a contest for residents to help design a new campaign to remind their neighbors of their duty to pick up their dog's doody.

“This contest will serve as a reminder to dog owners to take responsibility for cleaning up after their beloved pet." Menin said in an announcement Wednesday morning. "It’s frankly unacceptable and should be an expectation, not an option to pick up your dog’s waste."
Residents of Menin's district — or students who attend school in Council District Five — have until April 22 to submit their designs and slogans that relate to a dog owner's special stewardship of their pooch's poo.

"I launched this campaign to ensure dog owners curb their dog as it shouldn’t be the norm to dodge canine waste or worry about tracking fecal bacteria back into your home on your shoes, stroller, or shopping cart," Menin said.
The Council Member's office said that New Yorker's canines produce around 27,000 tons of waste a year, and that since 1978, city law states dog owners could face a $250 fine for not picking up their dog's fecal matter.
Those formerly ubiquitous "Curb Your Dog" signs were taken down across the city due to their dilapidated state, Menin's office said.
If you think your number two sign could be number one, send your landscape-oriented JPEG to curbyourdog.district5@gmail.com by the deadline.
