UES Woman Dies After Being Hit By Electric Scooter Rider: Police

An 86-year-old Upper East Side woman died one day after she was hit by a woman riding an electric scooter in East Harlem, police said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An elderly Upper East Side woman died one day after she was hit by an electric scooter rider while crossing an East Harlem street, police said.

Mehri Hekmati, 86, a Lenox Hill resident, succumbed to her injuries around 11 p.m. Saturday, police said Tuesday.

One day earlier, around 4:50 p.m. Friday, police say Hekmati was walking south on Third Avenue when she tried to cross East 104th Street. At that moment, a 35-year-old woman riding a stand-up electric scooter west along East 104th Street hit Hekmati in the street.

The Daily News reported that Hekmati was in the crosswalk at the time. The scooter rider, who was riding against traffic on a one-way street, stopped and tried to help Hekmati after the crash, according to the Daily News.

Hekmati was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she was initially listed in critical condition. No charges have been announced against the scooter rider, but police said an investigation is ongoing.
