The four people were members of the Doe Fund, the witness told Patch, which takes "people with histories of homelessness, incarceration, poverty, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS" and puts them to work cleaning city streets.
The four members of the Doe Fund's Ready, Willing & Able program have been treated and released from the hospital, according to a statement from the organization. The workers were waiting at their staging area at the time of the bus crash, the statement said.
"We are extremely thankful that the four trainees were not more seriously hurt, and that no other pedestrians were struck. We are also grateful for the first responders who arrived immediately to tend to their injuries and ensure everyone’s safety," President of the Doe Fund, George McDonald, said in a statement.
"It’s times like these that we are reminded of what the ‘men in blue’ mean to our neighborhoods. Their commitment to creating a cleaner, safer New York City is tireless, and we have been overwhelmed by the concern and expressions of support from our friends, neighbors, and elected officials."
