Upper East Side Co-Op Tries To Evict Noisy Gym, Report Says

The Crunch Fitness on East 66th Street may get the boot after building residents complained about noise.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Upper East Side gym is in danger of being kicked out of a co-op building because residents have complained about noise, according to reports.

The real estate firm Vornado Realty Trust is attempting to prove Crunch Fitness violated its lease at 201 E. 66th St., a large co-op building that spans the entirety of Third Avenue between East 66th and 67th streets, by being too loud, Commercial Observer first reported.

Vornado filed a lawsuit in the state Supreme Court attempting to boot the business from the building, which features other retail tenants such as Nike and J. Jill. In response to the lawsuit, Crunch has tried its best to better soundproof the gym, Commercial Observer reported.

Crunch's attempts at soundproofing — installing acoustic ceiling tiles, "floating" wood floors, mounting its speakers on pads and cancelling a morning class known to get loud — apparently failed to satisfy co-op tenants, who kept complaining about the business, Commercial Observer reported.

Vornado moved to default on the 15-year lease in June and the two parties are currently attempting to settle the issue out of court, Commercial Observer reported.
