Burglary Is On The Rise On The Upper East Side, New NYPD Data Show

There were 26 burglaries reported over 28 days between February and early March, data show, or almost a burglary a day.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The Upper East Side has been burglarized out of a touted city-wide drop in crime rates, newly released NYPD data show.

Silk Stocking District burglaries more than doubled over the past month, in comparison to the same period last year, with just 10 reported in 2022 but 26 reported in 2023, according to stats from the 19th Precinct.

That's almost a burglary a day.

While the NYPD announced with much fanfare Friday that citywide crime stats dropped nearly six points last month in comparison to February 2022.

That trend skipped the Upper East Side, where overall crime dropped just half a point, and where later that night an Upper East Side deli worker was killed by a shooter in a hazmat suit.

The lone murder appears on the 19th Precinct report (there were zero in 2022) as well as a jump in burglaries big enough to drive up major crime stats up 4 points, despite drops in robbery, felony assault, grand larceny and auto theft.

Meanwhile, New York City saw an overall 4 percent drop during the same time period.
