Upper East Side Now 80% Vaccinated, But No Surge Amid Mandates

With mandates in effect and winter approaching, here's how the Upper East Side is faring in the city's COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Hundreds of Upper East Side residents continue to get vaccinated each week, data shows, pushing the neighborhood past a major threshold — though recent mandates do not appear to have quickened the pace by much.

As of Sunday, about 81 percent of Upper East Side residents had gotten at least one shot of the coronavirus vaccine, according to a Patch analysis of city data. At the start of June, that number was about 70 percent.

But as the overall rate has continued creeping up, the pace of vaccinations has been uneven in the neighborhood, the data shows.

The biggest surge in shots came in mid-July, when more than 1,800 Upper East Siders got vaccinated in a single week. Things picked up speed again in August, when over 1,000 residents got their shots in back-to-back weeks.

Since then, the pace has slowed somewhat: between Oct. 7 and 14, for example, just 178 residents got vaccinated, according to the data.

In the week between Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, at least 957 Upper East Side residents got their first vaccine dose. That seven-day stretch coincided with the Nov. 1 deadline for 378,000 city workers to get vaccinated — a hotly contested mandate that leaders nonetheless insisted had succeeded in persuading thousands of people to get their shots.

"Time and time again we put the mandates in place and they've worked," de Blasio said last week, citing a jump in the city's workforce vaccination rate from 86 to 91 percent

All told, at least 163,777 people across the Upper East Side's five ZIP codes have gotten vaccinated as of Thursday. The 10075 ZIP code — a narrow strip between East 76th and 80th streets — had the highest rate, at about 91 percent. Neighboring 10028, which runs from 80th to 87th streets, was lowest, at 76 percent.
