Upper East Side's Vivolo Closes After 41 Years: Report

The Upper East Side Italian restaurant announced its closure with a sign outside its door.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Longtime Upper East Side Italian restaurant Vivolo has closed after more than four decades in business, according to reports.

The restaurant, located on East 74th Street between Lexington and Park avenues, placed a sign outside its door this week stating it is permanently closing, Eater New York first reported. Owner Angelo Vivolo told Eater: "Unfortunately to be profitable is difficult with present conditions. It is very difficult for a neighborhood restaurant of 40 years plus like mine to survive."

Vivolo opened the Italian eatery in 1977 and has occupied the same two floors in a 19th century townhouse for its entire run, according to the restaurant's website. The restaurateur also operated two Cucina Vivolo restaurants, which were more casual, on East 58th Street and East 74th Street. Both of those restaurants are also closed, Eater reported.

The East 74th Street Vivolo was a true neighborhood restaurant. The food wasn't too expensive — a three-course prix fixe cost about $30 for both lunch and dinner — and it was located in a classic Upper East Side townhouse.
