Woman Thwarts Rape Attempt On UES Street, Attacker Arrested, Cops Say
Police arrested a suspect over the weekend after a woman was brazenly attacked in an attempted rape on an Upper East Side street.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Police arrested a suspect on Saturday in connection with the brazen attempted rape of a woman on an Upper East Side street late Friday night.
Brian Mendieta, 26, was arrested Saturday afternoon for the attempted rape of a 27-year-old woman. He faces multiple charges, including assault and harassment, according to court records.
According to police, the victim was standing in front of 349 East 76th St. shortly before midnight when Mendieta approached and attacked her.

Details of the assault were not provided, but an NYPD spokesperson said that the victim was able to fight off Mendieta's attack, causing him to flee westbound on East 76th Street on a “two-wheel scooter.”
Responding to a 911 call reporting an "assault in progress," police found the victim, who has not been identified, and rushed her to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition.

Mendieta was arrested the next day, police said.
