The new Upper West Side emergency shelters are part of the 98 in the city that have opened in response to the migrant crisis, reported the New York Post.

The Belnord Hotel, along with The Lucerne and Belleclaire, also served as a temporary homeless shelter for 100 people during the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

In the same manner as the temporary shelters opened during the height of COVID, public hearings for community members are not required for emergency shelters.

The emergency shelter openings come as a safe haven at West 83rd Street between Amsterdam and Columbus is expected to open by the end of April with more than 100 beds for people experiencing street and subway homelessness.
