Australian Tourist Fatally Struck By Truck On UWS: NYPD

The truck driver was charged with driving while intoxicated.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Australian tourist riding a bike on the Upper West Side was hit and killed by a truck on Friday night, police said.

Madison Jane Lyden, 23, was riding north on the Central Park West bike lane around 4:45 p.m. when she was forced to swerve into a car lane when a livery cab pulled into the bike lane, police said. When Lyden swerved, she was struck by a private carting truck that was traveling north on Central Park West, police said.

The tourist suffered severe trauma to the body and was taken to Roosevelt Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Both drivers stayed on the scene of the accident.

Police charged Felipe Chairez, 44, with driving while intoxicated.
