Barnacle-Encrusted Citi Bike Pops Up In UWS Dock

The mysterious Citi Bike appeared at the Riverside and West 73rd Street dock after a long journey from the depths of the sea.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side filmmaker's hopes to utilize New York's bike share system were dashed last weekend when the only vehicle at his local Citi Bike dock was a rusted mess covered in barnacles.

Yes, barnacles. Everywhere. Barnacles on the seat, the handlebars and even intertwined with the bike's gears.

"Hey @CitiBikeNYC! I raced over to the rack by my house, hopeful to grab the one CitiBike that was there. It has literally just been fished out of the river. It is held together with rust and barnacles. 73rd and Riverside [facepalm emoji]" Ted Geoghegan, creator of horror movies such as "Mohawk" and "We Are Still Here" wrote on Twitter.

It turns out that the bike may have suddenly returned to Citi Bike's system after a years-long underwater adventure. A Citi Bike spokesperson told Gothamist that the bike's last checkout was in September of 2017 and that a team removed the bike after receiving Geoghegan's complaint.
