Driver Charged In Death Of Pedestrian, 89, After Upper West Side Crash

The elderly victim clung to life for several weeks before dying, officials said. An 87-year-old woman was also injured.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A Staten Island man has been charged in a fatal pedestrian crash that took place in October on the Upper West Side, according to police.

The crash on Oct. 26 at the intersection of Riverside Boulevard and West 70th Street claimed the life of 89-year-old Leonard Sugin and injured an 87-year-old woman, New York City police said.

Police announced on Feb. 1, 2024 that 64-year-old Malik Mohammad has been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian after the crash.

Police said that Mohammad was driving a 2019 Cadillac Escalade southbound on Riverside Boulevard, when he struck Sugin and the female pedestrian as they were crossing the road westbound to 70th Street.

Mohammad remained at the scene after the collision, police said.

First responders took both pedestrians to New York Presbyterian Weil Medical Center in stable condition, and officials said Sugin later died from his injuries on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23). He lived in the 200 block of 70th Street, not far from where the accident took place.
