Fire Breaks Out Near Lincoln Center, FDNY Says

Firetrucks and ambulances flooded a block between Lincoln Center and the Amsterdam Houses development on Wednesday afternoon.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a public housing building on the Upper West Side, forcing first responders to operate in large numbers near Lincoln Center, an FNDY spokesman said.

The fire started on the ninth floor of a building at 70 Amsterdam Ave, located between West 62nd and 63rd Streets, shortly after 4:30 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said. The blaze prompted a high-rise response, which means 20 fire units with 78 fire and EMS personnel worked the scene.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 5:15 p.m. and nobody was injured, an FDNY spokesman said.

Firetrucks and ambulances took up nearly the full width of Amsterdam Avenue as responders operated at the scene, according to witness video.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by city fire marshals.
