Gas Explosion Knocks Out Windows Of UWS Equinox, FDNY Says
Ninety people were evacuated from the Upper West Side gym building before the explosion.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A gas explosion in the basement of an Upper West Side Equinox gym blew out the building's windows and prompted dozens of evacuations, fire officials said.
About 90 people were evacuated from the gym building at 2465 Broadway and West 92nd Street when officials detected a gas leak in the early evening, FDNY Assistant Chief John Hodgens said. The gas leak led to an explosion within the building around 7 p.m., fire officials said.
FDNY investigators beleive the explosion was sparked by a fire from a nearby transformer, fire officials said.
