Lincoln Center Announces Free Summer Events Lineup

This year's free Lincoln Center Out of Doors event series will be held from July 24 to Aug. 11. Check out what's in store.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Lincoln Center's annual summer event series — Lincoln Center Out Of Doors — is set to begin on July 24 this year and run through Aug. 11. This year's festival will feature events such as concerts, dance performances and lecture series.

Highlighting this year's Out of Doors series are events such as a concert by Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy, singer Lalah Hathaway performing the songs of her father Donny Hathaway and an evening of standup comedy headlined by Roy Woods Jr., Lincoln Center announced.

This will be Lincoln Center Out Of Doors' 49th year, making it one of the longest-running free outdoor festivals in the country, the performing arts center said in a press release.

"The Out of Doors season tributes some of the groundbreaking artistry that has shaped artistic communities in New York City and beyond," Jill Sternheimer, Director of Public Programming at Lincoln Center, said in a statement. "Everyone is welcome to enjoy incredible rising talents, classic works of film, music, dance, and more for magical nights under the stars in Damrosch Park."

All Lincoln Center Out Of Doors events are free, do not require tickets and will be held somewhere on Lincoln Center's Upper West Side campus. Many of the events will take place in Damrosch Park located on West 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues.

Here are some highlights from this year's festival:

  • A celebration of Lincoln Center’s groundbreaking Black art and culture festival in 1972, Soul at the Center featuring Lalah Hathaway and The Illustrious Blacks;
  • Wilco front man, guitarist and songwriter Jeff Tweedy;
  • NPR Music’s Turning the Tables Live: The Motherlode. This series features female artists who greatly influenced popular music with musical direction by Terri Lyne Carrington and performances by Rhiannon Giddens, Xiomara Laugart, Ledisi, Amina Claudine Myers, Cleo Reed, Valerie Simpson, Charenée Wade and Lizz Wright;
  • Dance nights featuring performances by Caleb Teicher & Company, a screening of the concert film "Liza with a 'Z'" and flamenco star Jesús Carmona;
  • MTV & Save The Music concerts featuring H.E.R. and Samm Henshaw;
  • Look at My Soul: The Latin Shade of Texas Soul. This musical tribute to Texas-grown Chicano soul sounds features Lee Fields & the Expressions and the Black Pumas
  • A performance from Latin fusion group La Santa Cecilia and a screening of Disney/Pixar’s Coco;
  • Standup Comedy with Roy Wood Jr. and guests;
  • An event called desi:NOW, which blends tradition Indian music and dance with styles such as hi-hop and tap;
  • OkayAfrica’s Gold & Soul with singer Adekunle Gold and DJ Poizon Ivy
  • Americanafest NYC closes the "Out of Doors" series with performances from Patty Griffin and Yola.
