The Lucerne Hotel Reopens 4 Months After Closing As Shelter

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Four months after The Lucerne stopped operating as a temporary homeless shelter, you can now book a room again in the Upper West Side hotel at 201 West 79th Street.

The Lucerne announced the news on its Instagram.

"We are beyond excited to announce The Lucerne has reopened! We have truly missed all of our guests and we look forward to welcoming you," the UWS hotel wrote on its social media account.

The last men still living at The Lucerne's temporary homeless shelter left on June 28. The men arrived at the UWS hotel 11 months earlier after the city decided to use hotels as temporary shelters to help against overcrowding at congregate shelters during the pandemic.

The mayor's decision to end the temporary shelter system drew major backlash at the time.

Earlier in the summer, The Lucerne said it was planning to reopen as a commercial hotel in the fall after undergoing renovations.
