Pair Of Upper West Side Streets Get New Names: Here's Where

The City Council approved 199 street renamings on Tuesday, here are the two on the Upper West Side you should know about.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A couple of new signs are coming to the Upper West Side after the City Council approved 199 street renamings on Tuesday.

There were two approved renamings in the neighborhood.

The namesakes of the new streets are odes to one of the greatest ballet dancers ever and the former prime minister and president of Israel.

Here are the new Upper West Side Street renamings.


Jacques d'Amboise: The northwest corner of West 64th Street and Columbus Avenue

  • The specific intersection did not have a name before the new renaming.
  • D'Amboise was an American ballet dancer, choreographer, actor, and educator. He joined the New York City Ballet in 1949 and became the principal dancer in 1953. He would go on to dance 24 roles for George Balanchine.
  • D'Amboise founded the National Dance Institute in 1976.
  • D'Amboise died at his Manhattan home on May 2, 2021.

Shimon Peres Place: Intersection of West 95th Street and Riverside Drive

  • The specific intersection did not have a name before the new renaming.
  • Peres was an Israeli politician who served in multiple high-ranking roles throughout his 70-year career. Most notably, he was the President of Israel from 2007 to 2014 and the Prime Minister of Israel from 1984 to 1986 and from 1995 to 1996.
  • Peres came to New York City multiple times over his life, studying at The New School and New York University as a young adult.
