87-Year-Old Professor Dies After Robbery At UWS ATM, Police Say

The man was punched in the head as he used an ATM machine at a neighborhood bank.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side man has died from injuries he suffered during a robbery at a neighborhood bank, police said.

Dr. Young Kun Kim was pronounced dead Thursday at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he had been in critical condition since a May 13 robbery, police said. Kim was punched in the head as he used an ATM machine at a Citibank branch on Broadway between West 96th and 97th streets, police said.

Matthew Lee, 50, was arrested Wednesday and charged with robbery and assault in connection with the attack, police said. Police have not yet announced whether Lee's charges will be upgraded now that Kim has died from his injuries, police said.

Kim was identified as former Lehman College professor, the New York Post reported. Former students described the professor as "sweet" and "very understanding," in interviews with the Post. He was also a resident of the Upper West Side, living in an apartment building on West End Avenue near West 100th Street.
