Upper West Side Manhole Fire Shoots Smoke Into Street: Video
Firefighters and police have shut down West 64th Street and Broadway.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side manhole shot plumes of smoke into a busy street Friday, an FDNY spokesman said.
Firefighters arrived at the corner of West 64th Street and Broadway around 9:45 p.m. and observed a heavy amount of smoke coming from what appears to be a manhole fire, an FDNY spokesman said. Police shut down traffic at the intersection during the response, the spokesman said.
The fire was declared under control around 2:30, fire officials said.

Cracking and bubbling sounds came from the manhole as it released smoke, according to eyewitness video from the scene.

Nobody was injured during the fire, an FDNY spokesman said.
