UWS Crime Drops 11% Over Nov. '22: NYPD Data

November saw crime fall 11 percent on average compared to the same month last year on the Upper West Side.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Crime is on the decline in the Upper West Side.

In the 20th and 24th precincts that comprise the Upper West Side, crooks and killers are about 11 percent less busy on average, according to NYPD statistics.

The latest metrics also reflect the citywide trend of slightly falling crime.

In New York City, major crimes fell 4.24 percent compared to the same month last year. On the Upper West Side, 184 major crimes reported on the Upper West Side’s 20th and 24th precincts this time last year fell to 163 in November 2023, resulting in a 11.41% decrease in major crime in the neighborhood.

In the 20th precinct, which spans West 59th to West 86th streets, robberies decreased by 50% (five incidents reported in November); felony assaults decreased by 44% (five reported in November); burglaries decreased by 16.67% (five reported in November) and murders (zero reported in November), shooting incidents (zero reported in November) transit crimes plateaued (one reported in November).

During the same month, grand larcenies increased 1.52% in the precinct (67 incidents reported in November) and petit larcenies also went up by 7.41% (87 incidents reported in November).

In the 24th precinct, which spans West 86th Street to Cathedral Parkway, felony assault is down 47.83 percent (12 incidents reported in November); grand larcenies are down 16.67% (35 incidents reported in November; petit larceny is down 5% (134 incidents reported in November) and transit crimes are down 75 percent (one incident reported in November).

Robberies (nine incidents reported in November) and burglaries (12 incidents reported in November) remained at the same level, per NYPD data.

On the whole, the continued decline in crime statistics could be a promising sign during a time when crime is still up compared to recent history.

Data shows major felonies are still up by 32 percent over two years ago, and by 13.8 percent compared to 10 years ago.

Despite the recent increases since the pandemic, reported crime is still lower for the Upper West Side when compared to the late Giuliani administration. In 2022, reported crime was down by more than 22 percent compared to 2001 levels.
