UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A vigil for democracy took place Thursday evening on the Upper West Side at Verdi Square in "somber remembrance of the tragic day of Jan. 6, 2021."

The vigil was hosted by UWSMoveOn/Indivisible Action Group, which describes itself as a "congenial group" formed "after Trump's election who are committed to taking actions to resist Trump and the Republican agenda."

The "We the People: Jan. 6th Day of Remembrance and Action" vigil happened from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. within Verdi Square outside the West 72nd Street train station.

"It’s been nearly one year since armed right-wing militants attacked our Capitol and tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election," reads a description for the vigil. "We must not forget what happened -- and we must demand action from our leaders to prevent another attack on our democracy. That’s why we’re organizing candlelight vigils across the country on Thursday, January 6, to lift up our voices and say: We are One America."
