WANTAGH, NY — A car burst into flames on Wantagh State Parkway on Saturday night and firefighters had to spray foam on the vehicle to smother the flames.

The Wantagh Fire Department was called around 10:30 p.m. Saturday to the northbound lanes of the parkway, about 1 mile south of Merrick Road. First Assistant Chief Tom Bloomfield and a safety officer arrived first and found the car engulfed in flames, a spokesman for the fire department said. Third Assistant Chief Bill Stevens also responded to the blaze.

Engine 5, led by Capt. Alex Errico, arrived and the crew attacked the flames with the help of firefighters from Engine 3, under the command of Capt. Phil Schaaf. Due to the nature and extent of the fire, crews used foam to smother the fire, causing the roadway to become slippery. A crew from the state Department of Transportation used sand to dry the roadway.
