Drawbridge Operation Testing Underway For Hempstead

WANTAGH, NY—Drivers should expect longer opening intervals of the Meadowbrook State Parkway drawbridge over Sloop Channel in Hempstead, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.

Beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 26, transportation officials say there will be extended bridge openings of 10-15 minutes taking place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. After the extended opening, the bridge will close for 10-15 minutes and won’t reopen until residual traffic has cleared.

Testing of the electrical and mechanical systems will continue for the remainder of this week.

As with most road and bridge projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather, officials stressed.

"NYSDOT appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists, mariners, and the local community while this project is undertaken," officials said in a news release.
