WANTAGH, NY — An off-duty Nassau police officer sprung into action after he heard a splash and screams off the Wantagh Park Marina dock Wednesday afternoon.
The off-duty Nassau County Police Department Aviation Unit officer was at the marina around 2:45 p.m. when he heard a splash and cries for help, according to police. The officer quickly located an 80-year-old woman submerged in the water and trapped under the dock.
The officer dislodged one board of the dock and grabbed hold of the woman, holding her head above the water while other first responders, including the Emergency Services Unit and the Wantagh Fire Department, arrived and removed more dock boards to safely lift the woman onto the dock.
