Fire Prevention Week Highlights Need For Smoke Alarms In LI Homes

This year's theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you."

WANTAGH, NY — This is Fire Prevention Week and State Farm is joining forces with the Wantagh Fire District to bring awareness to the community.

This year's theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you."

Local State Farm agent Sandra Simpson recently donated a toolkit of resources to the Wantagh Fire District. It includes activities and information for children and adults, providing age-appropriate messages about smoke alarms and other home fire safety and prevention resources.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than half (54 percent).

"This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign highlights simple but critical steps people can take to ensure that the smoke alarms in their homes are installed, tested and maintained properly," Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.

"Helping people manage the risks of everyday life is a fundamental part of our mission," said Simpson, who works at the State Farm on Wantagh Avenue. "Through our collaboration with NFPA and Wantagh Fire District, we are actively working towards increasing awareness about fire prevention."

Fire Prevention Week runs until Oct. 12.
