Jones Beach To Stay Open Late For Meteor Shower Show

The Perseids Meteor Shower can be viewed on the evenings of Tuesday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 13.

WANTAGH, NY — A meteor shower is expected next week and Long Islanders can head to Jones Beach for special viewing.

There will no charge and a normal star-gazing permit will be waived.

Jones Beach State Park will stay open for nighttime hours for residents can get the best chance of nature's spectcle. Those in attendance must remain near your vehicles, the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said.

It's also encouraged to bring a chair that reclines as you look toward the northeast sky.

Visitors can watch the meteor shower at the West End 2 (the west parking lot) of Jones Beach State Park.

The moon is expected to be 84 percent full on Aug. 12, which could reduce visibility of the meteor shower, the Weather Channel.com said.

The meteor shower should be visible through Aug. 23.
