Letter to Editor: Attend Friday's Save Tackapausha Rally

Friends of Tackapausha Commitee urges large turnout for Friday's rally scheduled for noon in front of Seaford museum.

To the editor:

, located on 84 acres of a nature sanctuary and preserve, offers unparalleled environmental education programs which teach children about the unique environment and ecology of our area, and has well served the community for 65 years.

Nassau County residents are outraged by the current complete closure of Tackapausha Museum in spite of the county’s promise to reopen it in January 2012 (although on a much reduced schedule). In fact, in December, the director of the museum was laid off, and the museum was closed indefinitely, notwithstanding the fact that hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars were recently spent to repair and renovate the museum and pond.

We must show the county how important this museum is to our children. Please demonstrate your support for Tackapausha Museum and by joining the Friends of Tackapausha Commitee and others who want to save this historic and beautiful site at a rally on Friday at noon in front of the museum.

The Friends of Tackapausha is a recently formed organization with the express mission of working with Nassau County to assist the museum’s Director (a qualified county employee) and its staff to operate the museum and to maintain and preserve natural habitats, wildlife, animal exhibits, collections, hiking trails, environmental educational programs and nature walks so that this gem of a preserve and museum can serve current and future generations of Nassau County residents.  We do not wish to see the museum or preserve privatized.

The Friends of Tackapausha is a non-partisan organization with charitable 501(C)(3) tax exempt status pending, and comprised of people who are members of a broad spectrum of environmental, neighborhood, civic and economic organizations. This includes the South Shore Audubon Society, Seaford Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club of Massapequa, Chamber of Commerce of Massapequa,  Friends of Massapequa Preserve, Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, Seaford Wellness Council, Long Island Horticultural Society, Drug Free Long Island, Nassau County Auxiliary Police and Troop 90 Boy Scouts.
