SEAFORD, NY — Jim Valvano is famous for leading North Carolina State to the stunning NCAA Championship in 1983. He is also known as a sportscaster and for his public battle with cancer. But before everyone knew his name, Valvano was a three-sport star at Seaford High School.

For his process as a teenager, Valvano was inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Valvano quarterbacked the football team, was a standout shortstop on the baseball team and was point guard on the basketball team, which would be his life's choice. Valvano coached Bucknell and Iona before his big break at NC State. A last-second bucket for the 1983 title against heavily favored Houston cemented his greatness as a coach.
