Census Shows Slight Population Drop in Wantagh-Seaford

Less residents living in Wantagh, Seaford and North Wantagh compared to 10 years ago.

A five-year study released this week by the U.S Census Bureau shows slight decreases in the total populations of Wantagh, Seaford and North Wantagh.

The total population of Wantagh is now 18,334 compared to 18,971 in the 2000 census. Seaford now has 15,473 residents, a drop of 318 from the 15,791 that were reported 10 years ago. North Wantagh's population now stands at 11,911, which is down 461 from 12,156 a decade ago 

Additional figures released in the study show that 2.3 percent of children between ages five and 17 fall below the poverty line in the Wantagh School District, up from 1.7 percent reported in 2008. In the Seaford School District there are now 3.3 percent of children ages five to 17 below the poverty line compared with 3.4 percent in 2008.

This latest data comes from the 2005-2009 American Community Survey (ACS), which collects population and housing information annually on each community. While results of the 2010 U.S. Census won't be released until February, much of the information revealed by the ACS can be compared to the data from the 2000 U.S. Census

  • The median household income for Wantagh increased from approximately $83,916 in 1999 to $106,661 in 2009. Seaford's median household income rose from $78,572 in 1999 to $100,227 in 2009. In North Wantagh the median household income jumped from $70,252 in 1999 to $94,593 in 2009. 
  • The vast majority of the Wantagh-Seaford area is comprised of families including 81 percent of households in Wantagh, 82 percent in Seaford and 77 percent in North Wantagh.
  • Of people 16 and older, the highest percentage of employment for the area is in the educational services/health care/social assistance industry including 31 percent for North Wantagh, 22 percent for Wantagh and 21 percent for Seaford.
