A shark was sighted off the shore of Jones Beach Tuesday afternoon, according to Bucket & Buoy, which represents the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corp.
Nearby beaches were temorarily closed to swimmers as a precaution.

Initial reports indicated the shark was spotted from the East Bathhouse.

Last week, Long Island joined several other seaside destinations on the East Coast to report shark sightings. Lifeguards spotted a 6- or 7-foot long shark about 80 yards from the shore at Overlook Beach in Babylon. The incident prompted officials to close Overlook, Cedar, and Gilgo Beaches to swimmers as a precaution for about an hour.

Last month, a fisherman uploaded a video of great white sharks feeding on a whale carcass about 45 miles south of Long Beach. The video went viral and has nearly 2 million hits on YouTube. Watch it here:
