SEAFORD, NY — Police are searching for a thief who stole items from a grocery store in Seaford and drove off in a cab when the driver refused to give him a ride.

Around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the suspect instructed a 50-year-old cab driver to drive to a grocery store on Merrick Road, near Washington Avenue, and then entered the store. The man loaded a shopping cart with goods and left the store without paying, police said. When he got back into the cab and told the driver to leave, the driver refused. The thief shoved the driver and drove off in the cab, heading north on Washington Avenue.

The driver was not hurt. The cab was found abandoned in a parking lot on Wheeler Road in Central Islip.
