VALLEY STREAM, NY — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has approved a second COVID-19 booster shot for people 50 and older, along with those who are immunocompromised.

Rite Aid and Walgreens will offer the latest vaccine for Long Islanders.

Dr. Chid Iloabachie, associate chair of emergency medicine, Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital, was a guest on Wednesday's "Patch AM."

While he understands the "COVID-19 fatigue" after two years, the doctor said those who are eligible should "absolutely" get another boost based on the data they have.

"Immunity that is acquired from the third vaccination dosage begins to wane around four, five, six months, to the point there is very little immunity conferred against acquiring COVID-19 infection again," Dr. Iloabachie said.

He anticipates a second boost, or fourth overall shot, will eventually open up to the entire population.

"In my personal opinion, I would like a lot of focus to go on those who are still not vaccinated at all," he said. "When the rest of the population has caught up to that state of immunity then we can consider adding those additional doses."
