Thomas Burke was so popular with students because he "took the time to know each child," the Harbor Elementary president said.

SEAFORD, NY — It's a bittersweet time for students and staff at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. A beloved educator is moving on.
Thomas Burke is heading down the road with a return to where it all started — the Wantagh School District.

"The kids are very excited about it," Vanessa Krussman, Seaford Harbor PTA president, told Patch.
Even though Burke is staying in the community, he will undoubtedly be missed after seven years as the Harbor Elementary principal.

"It is a tough loss not to see his face when the kids are walking into the front doors," she said. "He's always very visible and present."
Burke made a difference in many lives at Harbor Elementary, as indicated by the many well-wishing comments on social media.
What made him so important to the school? Krussman said treating each impressionable youngster with respect went a long way.
"He really took the time to know each child and their family," she said. "Every child felt special because they knew that their principal knew them."
No matter the topic, Burke was willing to address concerns.
"He really had an open-door policy with families," Krussman said about his welcoming demeanor.
Krussman, a member of the PTA board for six years, has only positive memories from her direct interactions with Burke as president since last year.
"Every single time I had an idea, he would always have something that would make it even better," she said.
A former teacher for the Mandalay Elementary School, Burke officially starts as principal of neighboring Forest Lake Elementary on July 1.
"Whatever position he's taken on, he's taken it on wholeheartedly. He really has made an impact in whatever capacity he's in," Krussman said.
