Troopers To Crack Down On Speeding, DWIs Over Holiday Weekend: PD

State police will add patrols during Columbus Day Weekend.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Throughout Columbus Day Weekend, state police will step up efforts to combat speeding and drunken driving on highways, including the Southern State Parkway, officials siad.

The Columbus Day Speed and Impaired Driving Enforcement Initiative is an effort to reduce the number of incidents caused by dangerous driving, the state police said.

"Speed and impaired driving continue to be the leading cause of fatalities on highways and account for approximately one-third of all fatal crashes," state police said.

Among the basic but potentially life-saving tips recommended by state troopers are:

  • Obey the speed limit.
  • Designate a sober driver, or plan for a ride share.
  • Wear your seatbelt.
  • Do not get distracted.
