The inaugural Wantagh Warrior 9/11 Memorial 5K is on Sept. 22.
WANTAGH, NY — A Long Island school is holding its first 5k race as a way to honor the victims of 9/11.
The Wantagh School District will host the inaugural Wantagh Warrior 9/11 Memorial 5k on Sunday, September 22. It is being presented through the Gary Sinise Foundation.
"One of the things I kind of had on my to-do list was to put together a 9/11 committee," Wantagh High School Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone told Patch. "It's important that our students understand and know about the heroism that happened on that day."

The students were born after the unthinkable events on Sept. 11, 2001, Guzzone said it wants to ensure the victims' memories are not forgotten over time.
"I actually have teachers in my building, who are educating students, who were not alive on 9/11," he said.

One Wantagh teacher had the idea of having a 5k as a way of keep 9/11 in people's minds.
"Everyone said they were all in, and then we began planning," Guzzone said.
You can find out more about the race, including registering details at the school's website.
