Dog Swallows Pins Left In Food In Fort Tryon Park, Report Says

It appears the pins were intentionally left in discarded food to harm animals, reports said.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS-INWOOD, NY — Dog owners of Washington Heights and Inwood beware: Somebody is leaving metal pins in discarded food in Fort Tryon Park.

A dog owner rushed his golden retriever to the vet after finding the animal had swallowed pins after it got into some discarded scraps on a park path two days in a row, according to reports. The dog, named Murphy, needed emergency surgery to remove eight pins, ABC News first reported.

Murphy's owner, Terence Doherty, told ABC News that the dog had gotten stuck by the pins on Monday and Tuesday, but he didn't think she actually swallowed any. Luckily for Murphy, the golden retriever will recover from the potentially life-threatening scare.

"I'm kind of horrified because it sounds like the pins were put in there and that implication is what terrifies me," Dr. Hilary Jones of Lincoln Square Veterinary Hospital told ABC News. "Eight pins? These could have punctured the stomach or through the intestines, it could be like a life-ending issue."
