National Guard opens recruiting office at JCC (wwnytv.com) — A new National Guard recruiting office has opened right on the Jefferson Community College campus in Watertown, giving students an easy, year-round place to explore military careers and tuition benefits. Recruiters and college leaders say the office will better serve JCC’s large military-affiliated population and build on the school’s recognition as a top military-friendly community college.
   

2. High school basketball action (wwnytv.com) — Watertown High’s girls basketball team thrilled home fans with a dominant 48–18 non-league win over East Syracuse Minoa, highlighted by outside shooting and aggressive defense. The roundup also checks in on Ogdensburg’s tight victory over Potsdam and Norwood-Norfolk’s big win against Parishville-Hopkinton, giving North Country hoops fans plenty to talk about.
   

3. New York man sentenced to 25 years to life for hammer murder of elderly neighbor (shorenewsnetwork.com) — An 88-year-old Watertown woman’s killing has led to a 25-years-to-life prison sentence for the man convicted of attacking her with a hammer in her apartment. Jurors saw surveillance and text evidence tying him to the crime, despite his claims of innocence and accusations against police. The judge imposed the maximum penalty, citing the brutality of the case.
   

4. New Bill Would End Emissions Targets (post-journal.com) — State Sen. Mark Walczyk of Watertown has introduced a bill to repeal New York’s cap-and-invest emissions program and key mandates in the state’s climate law, directly challenging ongoing regulatory efforts. The move comes as state officials appeal a court order forcing them to finalize emissions-cutting rules, with environmental groups and the state battling over how long any delay should be.
   

5. Upstate County's New Bus Service Will Turn A Transit Desert Into A Rural Network (streetsblog.org) — Watertown will become the hub of a new Jefferson County bus network launching in 2026, finally linking city residents to jobs, schools, Fort Drum, and nearby towns for a $2 fare. Four routes will radiate from Watertown and connect with other counties’ systems, while volunteer drivers may provide first-mile/last-mile rides so more residents without cars can reach essential services.
