WEST VILLAGE, NY — Indie rock fans always used to say there must have been something in the water of Athens, Georgia during the 1990's, but it might have just been the cheap rent.

A newly available rock documentary explores how the sleepy town in the Peach State helped cultivate indie rock giants like of Montreal, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Elf Power and countless others who were members of the psychedelic indie rock collective called The Elephant 6 Recording Company.

On Aug. 25 and 26 at the IFC Center, the documentary, called "The Elephant 6 Recording Co." will premiere along with a Q&A featuring director CB Stockfleth, producer Lance Bangs & musician Robert Schneider.

And Schneider, who played guitar in Apples in Stereo and with Jeff Magnum on Neutral Milk Hotel albums, and has a PhD in mathematics, will perform an acoustic set at each screening.

The Q&A sessions will be moderated by David Cross on Aug. 25 and Busy Phillips on Aug. 26.

While the documentary has been out since 2019, it has only been available to view in a fittingly idiosyncratic manner: only on VHS and you had to call a special hotline to get it.

The film features dozens of musicians who were members of the tight-knit collective, as well as fans like Elijah Wood, Cross, and Danger Mouse.
