GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — After remnants of Hurricane Ida pounded the city last week, officials asked New Yorkers to call 311 to report damage to their homes or streets.

In the Greenwich Village and nearby area, residents appear to have heeded that call. From the evening of Sept.1, when the storm came crashing in — through Monday — Greenwich Villagers and nearby Lower Manhattan residents filed 90 complaints to 311 about flooding, water damage, fallen trees, and utility outages, city records show.

That's nearly double the number of similar complaints recorded in the neighborhood and surrounding area during the six days directly before Sept. 1, when only 46 complaints about the same issues came in.

A section of blocks in Chelsea, a neighborhood just uptown from Greenwich Village, appears to be a hotspot for reports of water floods and leaks in that area of Lower Manhattan during the storm.

Other complaints that appeared multiple times in and around Greenwich Village were damaged trees, sewer backup, and the loss of hot water.

Reports of damaged or fallen trees were filed at 96 Christopher Street, 11 Carmine Street, 618 Washington Streets, and multiple other nearby locations.

As a whole, Greenwich Village appeared to suffer less severe damage than other parts of the city, like the neighborhoods in Queens in Brooklyn that saw a majority of the 13 deaths that occurred within the five boroughs.

While not in Greenwich Village, relatively nearby footage of a subway station flooding at 28th Street and 7th Avenue was one of the most circulated videos of the damage caused by the storm.
