West Village Library Branch Reopens After 3-Year Closure

The Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library reopened after a three year, $10 million renovation project.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — A New York Public Library branch just reopened in the West Village after a three-year closure.

The Jefferson Market Library at 425 Sixth Ave. reopened last Thursday following a $10 million renovation project that included accessibility upgrades.

The construction project at the landmarked building began in April 2019, and included the following work.

  • Reconfiguring the Library's entrance on 6th Avenue.
  • The installation of a new, more effective elevator serving all floors of the library
  • Reconstructed ADA restrooms.
  • Renovated public and staff spaces, increasing public space and complementing the landmark building.
  • Improved data and power to support high-tech needs in the community.

"Jefferson Market is one of the Crown Jewels of the New York Public Library system and is a local, treasured gem," former NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson and West Village representative, told the New York Post.

The $10 million in funds that went to the library branch is part of more than $600 million in improvements happening across the New York Public Library system.

The Jefferson Market Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
