You Can Check Out The 4,500 Parks Department Trees In The West Village

A recently published map by the NYC Parks Department shows all of the trees it manages in the city, including in the West Village.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — Have you ever been curious about how many trees there are on a specific set of West Village blocks? Or what about in the entire neighborhood?

A new map allows you to find those answers.

The New York City Parks Department published in December what it calls the "most comprehensive" tree map in the world.

The map includes only those trees that the Parks Department oversees, meaning not the ones managed by conservancies or private entities.

In total, the map of the five boroughs shows the location of 862,991 trees and 537 different species. It also keeps track of any reported activity on a tree, such as soil management or weed whacking.

The map lists 4,561 trees in the West Village, which compares to 2,253 in the East Village.

Each tree on the map has its own dot, which after clicking will tell you its address, its ID number, its trunk diameter, the amount of storm water its intercepted each year, the amount of energy conserved, the air pollutants removed, its carbon dioxide reduced, and its total monetary value in annual benefits.
