East Quogue To Hold Public Hearing on New Budget

The East Quogue School District is set to hold a public hearing on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. at the East Quogue Elementary School on a new budget proposal.

The new $22.41 budget proposal was approved by the school board on June 3 after taxpayers failed to approve a cap-busting, $23 million budget by seven votes in May.

The new budget, according to Robert Long, principal, does not breach the tax cap and includes $600,000 in additional spending cuts with total spending increased  by one-quarter of 1 percent.

The recent cuts were "very difficult and gut wrenching," said Long.

Cut made to the new budget are two special education teachers, a part-time speech teacher, a part-time psychologist, a custodian, three teachers aides and four teaching assistants.

The cuts are in addition to cuts already made in the original budget proposal.

A re-vote is set for June 18.
