Missing Hiker In Long Island County Park Sparks Massive Search: PD

The hiker was found safe and treated for exposure after a massive, hours'-long search in Manorville Hills County Park, police say.

MANORVILLE, NY — A hiker from Staten Island went missing while out on a trail at Manorville Hills County Park Monday, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, a 911 call came in at about 2:30 p.m. regarding a missing hiker who had gone into the woods on a trail at the Manorville Hills County Park and became separated from his group, police said.

The hike began at about 9:30 a.m. and the hiker, a 67-year-old man, was last seen around 11:30 a.m., police said.

An extensive search effort was launched by Southampton Town police that included Southampton Town police patrol officers, the community response unit, ATV officers, detectives, a Southampton Town drone, a Southampton Village Police Department K-9 officer, New York environmental conservation, or Encon officers, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers, New York State police, Suffolk County police, Suffolk County park rangers, the Eastport Fire Department, Manorville Fire Department, Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps EMS woodland rescue team, and Manorville EMS, police said.

The search extended from County Road 51 and County Road 111 through the Pine Barrens and the surrounding wooded areas, police said.

The hiker was located at about 5:24 p.m. by members of the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps EMS woodland rescue team in the area of Calverton Hills, police said.

He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for evaluation and treatment for exposure due to being out in the cold; he is otherwise in good health, police said.

"Southampton Town Police would like to extend our thanks to all who were involved in locating the missing hiker," authorities said.
