Small Plane Crashes On Long Island

Police say the pilot escaped unharmed Saturday afternoon.

EAST QUOGUE, NY — A small plane crashed into shrubs while attempting to make an emergency landing on Long Island Saturday afternoon. The pilot walked away unharmed.

Southampton Town Police received a call at about 1 p.m. reporting a downed plane near County Road 104 in East Quogue.

The single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk had taken off from East Hampton Airport when its engine failed, forcing the 75-year-old pilot to attempt an emergency landing at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton. The plane crashed into shrubs just short of the airport.

The male pilot from New York City was not injured, police said.

New York State Police, who responded to the scene with Southampton officers, are handling the investigation into the crash.
