18-Year-Old Wins West Islip BOE Seat During Budget Vote, Election
The high school student, who made history Tuesday night, campaigned as a write-in candidate.
WEST ISLIP, NY — An 18-year-old has made West Islip history.
Quinn Bedell, a high school senior who campaigned as a write-in candidate, won a seat on the board of education, with 1,365 votes.
Five candidates vyed for three open seats in the 2023-2024 race for board of education.

Anthony Tussie, who obtained 1,398 votes and Christina Marks, who obtained 1,330 votes, have also been elected to the board of education.
Candidates Matthew Levy received 1,233 votes and Michael Pennolino, a write-in candidate, received 347 votes.

In addition, the West Islip School District's proposed budget of $134,220,230 with a budget-to-budget increase of 3.05 percent and a tax levy increase of 1.87 percent passed with 1,734 votes "yes" and 829 votes "no."
