2 Injured After Wrong Way Sunrise Highway Crash: Police

The wrong-way driver drove while intoxicated when he crashed into cars and then into a guardrail, police say.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Two people are injured after a man drove while intoxicated and in the wrong way on Sunrise Highway on Saturday, Suffolk County Police said.

Jose Espinoza-Silva, 24, of West Babylon, was driving a 2007 Jeep SUV eastbound on Westbound Sunrise Highway near Exit 39 at about 4:56 a.m.

When Highway Patrol officers arrived on the scene, he had crashed the Jeep into two vehicles, with two adult passengers each, and then into a guardrail in North Babylon, police said.

Two of the occupants of the vehicles that the Jeep crashed into were transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said. Espinoza-Silva was not injured.

The other two occupants of the vehicles declined treatment at the scene.
Espinoza-Silva was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

He is being held at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned this morning at First District Court in Central Islip.
