WEST ISLIP, NY – It was smooth sailing for students at Beach Street Middle School in the West Islip Union Free School District during a boat race earlier this month.

The school's annual Paddleboat Regatta Racing Challenge inspired Ashley Pope’s technology class students to put their engineering and boat-making skills to the test for the big race.

Students designed their own paddleboats made of wood, created paddles using Tinker Cad, an online 3D modeling program, and a three-dimensional printer. Once the boats were assembled, they used rubber bands to wind their paddles tight as they raced head-to-head in the water against each other.
