Officer Rescues Boy, 10, From LI Fire; Brothers Were Home Alone: PD
Another child, 8, was found outside the house when help arrived early Thursday — the boys were home alone, police say.
WEST ISLIP, NY — A Suffolk County police officer rescued an 10-year-old boy from a West Islip house fire Thursday morning, authorities said.
According to Suffolk County police, the fire broke out at about 7:30 a.m. at a home on Dogwood Road.
Third Precinct officers responded to Dogwood Road after a 911 caller reported a fire at the location. When officers arrived, an 8-year-old boy was outside the home after climbing out a window — but the 10-year-old boy was still inside, police said.

The boys, who are brothers, were home alone, police said.
Officer Richard Senese attempted to gain entry through the front door, which was locked, and was then able to enter through a side door, police said.

Upon entry, Officer Senese encountered heavy smoke conditions and was able to locate the boy and lead him outside, police said.
The boys were transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of smoke inhalation, police said. Officer Senese was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, police added.
Arson section detectives are investigating the cause of the fire, which originated in the basement — as of Thursday, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, police said.
