West Islip Seniors Named Finalists In LI Science Engineering Fair

The island-wide fair will take place next month.

WEST ISLIP, NY — Two West Islip students were recently recognized for their scientific abilities/

West Islip High School research seniors Asfar Chaudhry and Emma Fallon were each chosen as finalists for the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Both students are members of the Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge program through Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Asfar has been investigating elements present in lichens due to air pollutants using the Tender Energy X-ray Spectroscopy beamline.

Emma has been using infrared microscopy and the Frontier Synchrotron Infrared Spectroscopy beamline to discover the chemical compositions of microplastics that she collected in local waterways.
